Year 5

Belonging

Adjusting to new surroundings can sometimes be difficult, adolescence can bring about it's own set of difficulties.  Therefore having an opportunity to adapt to a new school environment prior to year 7 will help to foster a sense of belonging to the College which will assist the adjustment into the senior years. Your child will have the opportunity to join at the same times as a number of other students which opens the possibility of new friendship groups to form.

Leadership

Leadership opportunities for your child are available in Year 6,  helping to build your child's potential and build character.  Our College leadership structure allows students to take on roles such as prefect and house captain. They will have many opportunities to develop responsibility whether it be in formal events, the sporting field or general duties which instill confidence and problem solving abilities.

Transition

It is important that the transition from Junior School to Senior School be a positive one so that the love of school and the motivation to learn is maintained.  Generally young children establish new friends easily and if they enrol in year 5 they will move into Senior School with a group of known peers. Transition classes begin in Year 5 providing Junior School students an opportunity to take part in classes in the Senior School campus with secondary teachers.  They become familiar with routines, timetables and expectations which assist them to transition into Senior School and therefore the fear associated with moving into an unknown environment is removed.

Community

Student Wellbeing is of utmost importance throughout the College. Children children flourish when they feel safe and secure, with a clear understanding of the boundaries and rules of their environment.  Thomas Hassall offers a strong Pastoral Care framework along with a House system which fosters community.  Student remain in their house throughout their College life promoting the continuous connection with peers along with inclusion and encouragement in a variety of activities.
