Classroom Technology
The College has recently installed new computerised technology within the classroom environment in Senior School. The College would like to acknowledge the Federal Government for the financial support they have provided through the ‘National Secondary Schools Computer Fund’ (NSSCF). Through this initiative the College is eligible for funding for 144 computers for student use that will be installed and ready for use at the commencement of 2009.
Stage one of the NSSCF has been implemented which has included the installation of 30 computers which has comprised of 22 PC’s and 8 Mac laptops. The College has provided 8 lecterns, data projectors, wireless keyboard and mouse, electronic screens and DVD players. This initiative has significantly increased student access to information and provides effective teaching and learning tools. This will assist the College with our commitment to integrate technology within the classroom environment to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
Vegetable Garden
Primary students are pleased to have the expertise of our friendly neighbours to learn about growing vegetables. For over 40 years local residents Mr Gus and Mrs Carmella Riitano have been market gardeners in West Hoxton (now Middleton Grange). Since the College was established in 2000 the Riitanos and College staff have enjoyed a wonderful relationship.
When the College decided to establish a garden for Primary students to learn about how to grow vegetables it was obvious who to ask for assistance. Mr and Mrs Riitano were quick to positively respond to our request.
On Wednesday, 27th August, 2008 Kindergarten and Year 1 students commenced planting vegetables in our College garden. The students later wrote about their gardening experience with Mr and Mrs Riitano:
We had great fun watering the plants, planting and wearing proper gardening gloves. When we were digging we had to be very careful not to dig up the plants. We looked like real gardeners. Year 1 and Kindy would like to thank Mr and Mrs Riitano for being a wonderful help to us and teaching us about gardening.
The College is very grateful for the relationship and assistance provided by Mr and Mrs Riitano. The students are looking forward with anticipation to caring for their garden and watching the plants grow and produce. We would also like to acknowledge ‘Austral Seedlings’ for donating some of the plants.
